NFPA 86-2019 (Class A oven and furnace design): Minimizing dangers related to fire or explosions

Industrial ovens and furnaces classified as NFPA 86 Class A are those used to heat products that release flammable vapors or gases, so certain special precautions are required in order to avoid explosions.

Below, we will talk about the regulations established by the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) for the design of ovens and furnaces and the advantages of these regulations for the user.

About the NFPA 86 Class A Standard

In addition to this standard, in Europe there are similar ones such as EN746 and EN1539.

  • All new ovens and furnaces must be designed in compliance with the latest version of the standards in force at the time of manufacture.
  • When making modifications to an oven/furnace combustion system, it is mandatory to comply with the current version of the standard.
  • At Nutec Bickley we design our equipment based on the current NFPA 86 standard to ensure the highest levels of safety in our ovens and furnaces.

Requirements of NFPA 86 Class A

For this, several factors are taken into account, such as:

  • Type of solvents with which one is operating
  • Amounts of solvents used
  • Solvent release rate to the oven or furnace atmosphere
  • Boiling point of the solvent to be heated

We calculate the concentration of the oven or furnace atmosphere required to meet the 25% LFL of the solvent and thus determine the air flow that will be necessary to enter the furnace in order to achieve safe operation. This is called forced ventilation.

If a fan tube is to be used to ensure ventilation inside the oven or furnace, the engine must be inside the combustion system safety line. If the engine fails, the oven or furnace should automatically shut down for safety.

Where an LFL meter is being employed, the standard allows the mixture inside the oven to have a concentration of 50% of LFL.

1. We have a security checklist to check each of the requirements established by the standard being followed.

2. We analyze the flammable components that the customer will introduce into their oven or furnace, either jointly with them or by asking them for a sample of their products (where we then analyze the components used and are able to calculate their volatility rates).

3. We have the necessary experience to design equipment in accordance with any prevailing standard.
