ROLLER HEARTH FURNACES

Maximize efficiency with our Roller Hearth Furnaces

Roller Hearth Furnaces manufacturers in USA

Roller Hearth Furnaces are versatile, efficient and mostly used for index moving of work load baskets. They can also be set up in an oscillating configuration for long heating cycles on very long stock such as pipe, tubing, strip, and slabs.

The roller hearth can also handle heavy loads in high volumes because the rolls enable smooth movement of individual carriers, unlike pusher furnaces which rely on forcing a long line of base trays against each other to achieve movement of the product.

This style of furnace can be continuous or indexing on a fixed interval or can operated via forward/reverse oscillation-in-place to accomplish a particular time-temperature cycle.

If sufficient floor space is available, a roller hearth furnace can accomplish a multi-step process such as heating, soaking, and cooling steps, moving the product in a continuous manner. Using an indexing movement, the footprint can be much smaller because the hearth advances one basket at a time through the steps.

In the oscillate-in-place type, a long load is moved into the furnace chamber, its doors closed, then the system oscillates to keep the rollers from sagging and when the time-temperature cycle has been completed, the load is quickly powered out of the furnace chamber.

How to choose a Roller Hearth Furnaces?

Selecting a roller hearth furnace is a long-term investment that should be based on performance, reliability, and flexibility, not just initial cost.

Key specifications to consider

Temperature uniformity: If your process requires tight tolerances, design features such as vestibules, proper insulation, and high-performance heat circulation are mandatory to achieve constant desired results.
Heat transfer efficiency: Proper recirculation improves heat transfer rates and temperature consistency, reducing furnace length and energy consumption.
Conveyor system quality: Rolls, bearings, and drives must be engineered for your maximum load weight and size, speed, and operating temperature. A robust mechanical design system ensures many years of reliable operation with minimal maintenance.
Controls and data integration: PLCs and SCADA should align with your quality and traceability programs.

Beyond technical features, reliability and long-term support are what truly differentiate a roller hearth supplier. With international experience in custom industrial furnaces, NUTEC Bickley helps customers design solutions that perform today and remain competitive tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions about our roller hearth furnaces

What is a roller hearth furnace?

Roller Hearth Furnaces are versatile, efficient and mostly used for index moving of work load baskets. They can also be set up in an oscillating configuration for long heating cycles on very long stock.

What are the advantages of a roller hearth furnace?

  • Flexibility: We offer a wide range of sizes and types of electric or fuel-fired heating systems with matched cooling sections.
  • Turnkey Solution: Our experienced specialists can select the right combination to meet your production cycle and application requirements.
  • Great Value: We assure that you get a furnace of optimum design for high quality, increased production with minimum investment and operating costs.
  • Efficiency: No cooling water requirement.

Are open hearth furnaces still used?

Open hearth furnaces (OHF) have largely been replaced by electric arc furnaces (EAF) and basic oxygen furnaces (BOF) due to their inefficiency, high energy consumption, and environmental impact. While a few OHFs remain in use for specialized applications, most industries have transitioned to more efficient and sustainable technologies.

At Nutec Bickley, we design advanced industrial furnaces that offer higher energy efficiency, automation, and precision. Our SCADA-integrated systems ensure optimal temperature control and compliance with modern industry standards, helping manufacturers adopt cleaner and more efficient heat treatment solutions.

How does a roller hearth furnace work?

A roller hearth furnace moves loads through on heat-resistant rollers at a constant, controlled speed. The synchronized movement of the rollers, doors and possible quench tank elevator ensures that each part follows the same thermal cycle, achieving consistent results.

This constant movement allows precise control of temperature and residence time, making roller hearth furnaces ideal for heat treatment where uniformity and productivity are critical. The rolling conveyor also reduces mechanical stress on the product while supporting high production rates.

What are roller hearth furnace applications/uses?

Roller hearth furnaces are normally selected for continuous heat treatment of large volume parts, where consistency, speed, and temperature control are critical.

They are commonly used in the automotive industry to heat-treat aluminum components. Casting and forging operations also rely on roller hearth furnaces to process large production runs efficiently, improving cycle times while maintaining consistent results.

What are roller hearth advantages for production?

From a result standpoint, roller hearth furnaces deliver excellent process repeatability. Each part follows the same thermal cycle, helping reduce variation, rejects, and rework while supporting tighter production tolerances. Also, evenly distributed loads minimize mechanical stress, contributing to longer equipment life and reduced maintenance downtime.

Continuous operation also supports better energy efficiency, as the furnace remains thermally stable and avoids repeated heat-up and cool-down cycles. This contributes to a lower energy consumption per part and overall.

What is the capacity of a roller hearth furnace?

The throughput of a roller hearth furnace is typically defined by parts per hour, but it ultimately depends on size, weight, and treatment requirements. These furnaces can handle anything from a few large, heavy components, to hundreds of smaller parts per hour when using baskets or fixtures that allow multiple parts to be processed simultaneously.
