Difference between SCADA and HMI

November 7, 2024

In this article you will learn the differences between HMI and SCADA. At NUTEC Bickley we recommend the right equipment for your needs.

Difference between SCADA and HMI

The main feature of both HMIs and SCADA systems is that they have a screen to control manufacturing equipment, show process information, graphs, trends, etc.

As a result, it is common for these two systems to be confused; however, a SCADA system can contain everything we see with an HMI, but also more.

HMI (Human Machine Interface)

Also known as an ‘operator panel’. It consists of a screen that allows the user to interact with the equipment, in order to:

• View key information and monitor in real time the processes that occur in the machine/system.

• Enter the necessary information to initiate operation, set indicators, create recipes/mixes, etc.

• Control instruments and devices.

• View alarms and permits.

Usually the HMI is installed very close to the equipment, off to the side if possible. If there are several pieces of equipment, in our case furnaces, it is advisable to have an HMI for each one.

Using an HMI goes hand in hand with the installation of a PLC; without a PLC, having an HMI does not make much sense.

SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)

SCADA is the system of choice when functions of greater scope are needed for which the HMI is not sufficiently powered, such as:

• Handling large amounts of information.

• Greater graphics capacity.

• Saving longer trend and historical records.

• Linking with another network or computer.

• Providing greater programming possibilities.

• Operating the equipment remotely from various devices.

• Communicating with customer databases.

• Centralizing the management of several pieces of equipment.

How often should you back up equipment information?

We advise you to regularly back up your data to facilitate interruption-free operation.

• Recipes and equipment configuration: create a backup every time a change is made.

• Reports: these can be backed up weekly or monthly, according to the stored history.

How can Nutec Bickley help?

We can assist you in various ways:

• Our systems contain a PLC and HMI if the size of the furnace requires it.

• We can integrate a SCADA package with your system to help you centralize your operation and obtain reports.

• We provide maintenance for your obsolete SCADA systems to update them.

• We guide our clients, recommending the appropriate equipment in line with their needs.

At Nutec Bickley we have over 45 years of experience manufacturing industrial furnaces. Contact our expert advisors who will be able to review your processes and help you operate optimally.
